EUROPEAN SOLIDARITY CORPS VOLUNTEER

Vluchtelingenwerk Vlaanderen is looking for a European Solidarity Corps Volunteer to support our Startpunt team, one of the first line services. We provide information to asylum seekers, refugees and those who support them in many languages, to asylum seekers at the arrival centre in Brussels.

Introduction

Vluchtelingenwerk Vlaanderen is a non-governmental organisation, regrouping Flemish and Brussels based social organisations and volunteer groups defending the rights of asylum seekers and refugees in Belgium.  We are committed to support people fleeing war, violence and persecution. We do this with thirty-five member organizations and many enthusiastic volunteers. We support everyone who assists asylum seekers and refugees.  Together we increase the pressure on policymakers and sensitize the general public.

The Startpunt project is one of the first line services of Vluchtelingenwerk, providing information to asylum seekers, refugees and those who support them. Startpunt volunteers give information in many languages to asylum seekers at the arrival centre in Brussels.

Today we want to recruit one ESC volunteer to support our Startpunt project.

This position contributes to the following objectives:

  • Contribute to the protection of the rights of asylum seekers and refugees, and to their integration by facilitating access to correct information

  • Contribute to lobby and advocacy work for the protection of the rights of asylum seekers through monitorin ;

  • Increase solidarity in society by supporting citizens and organisations in their efforts to help.

 

The Startpunt team is composed of a coordinator, 3 European volunteers and a group of volunteers -half of them refugees- from Flanders and Brussels. 

The present position will be offered as a EUROPEAN SOLIDARITY CORPS CONTRACT for a period of 7 months.

The European Solidarity Corps brings together young people to build a more inclusive society, supporting vulnerable people and responding to societal challenges. It offers an inspiring and empowering experience for young people who want to help, learn and develop.

 

Candidate profile

As Vluchtelingenwerk is a movement that is strongly embedded in civil society, we expect the candidate to have been involved in civil society activities in his/her home country.

Openness and non-discrimination are essential principles in the Vluchtelingenwerk approach and we expect candidates to share the Vluchtelingenwerk values and working principles as well as the values of the European Solidarity Corps.

The candidate should dispose of the following skills and competences

  • Degree in social sciences;
  • Understanding of the role of civil society in migration issues
  • Eager to learn and adapt to the Belgian situation
  • Good listener and strong oral and written communication skills;
  • Planning and Organizational skills;
  • Being multilingual is an advantage. English is commonly spoken at Startpunt and knowledge of Tigrinya, French, Arabic or Spanish is an advantage.

Job description

  • Provide information at the arrival centre with the Startpunt team on asylum in Belgium.
  • Prepare training sessions and teambuilding activities; supporting the volunteers.
